The counter mirror is placed on the object to reproduce (document, painting etcetera) and the clear spot mirror is mounted on the lens. Now, the camera is positioned so that the mirror on the object reflects the camera in the view finder. This way, it is assured that the film plane and object plane are 100% parallel.
